The reason why you don’t do what you know you have to do

One of the big problems I run into when I try to help my readers create a life that suits them is that most of them don’t take action.

They know that they want to change certain aspects of their lives, they know what they have to do to change them… but weeks, months and years go by, and they do absolutely nothing.

When I ask them the reason for their behavior, they give me the most varied answers:

But the reality is that those are just the stories they tell themselves to justify themselves, and that the real reason for their inaction is related to something that Pau Forner Navarro explained in the last episode of the podcast.

According to Pau (and I totally agree with him), Most people don’t do what they know they have to do because they think they have to feel a certain way in order to act..

For example, do you think…

  • They have to feel prepared to start their online business
  • They have to feel motivated to be able to go to the gym every afternoon
  • They have to feel calm and safe to be able to approach to talk to that guy or that girl in the bar

¿And what’s happening?

That they spend their whole lives waiting to feel more prepared, more motivated or more secure, but since that never happens, in the end they do nothing.

Fortunately, human beings don’t work like that.

Your emotions do not condition your actions.

You don’t need to feel any way to be able to act.

And if you don’t believe me, think of all the mornings your alarm clock went off and you got up to go to work even though you didn’t feel like getting out of bed at all.

Or have you ever jumped off a high rock into a lake or skydived or something like that even though you were nervous or scared to death on the inside?

In these two cases, and in many more that I’m sure you can think of, you’ve been able to act even though your emotions weren’t there, so there’s nothing to stop you from doing it again.

Also, taking action is often the best (and sometimes the only) way to change how you feel.

Think about it…

  • When do you start to feel ready to start an online business? When you start to create it
  • When do you get lazy to go to the gym? When you are there and start training
  • And when do you get over the nerves of talking to an unknown boy or girl? When you walk up and start talking to her

I mean, it’s actually the other way around.

It is not your emotions that determine your actions, but it is your actions that determine how you feel.

For me, understanding this and being able to act although your emotions, is what differentiates a professional from an amateur, and it is, together with espabilism, the most important quality that you must develop if you want to be successful creating a life that suits you.

You cannot let your emotions determine what you are or are not going to do.

You cannot be a slave to your feelings.

Instead, you have to make the decision to be a professional and get used to doing what you have to…

  • Whether you feel ready or not
  • Whether you feel motivated or not
  • And whether you feel safe or not

Because whatever path you choose, even if you dedicate yourself to your passion, there will always be fears, uncertainty and days when you don’t feel like getting out of bed.

And only by acting in spite of those negative emotions will you get the results you seek and, in the process, change how you feel.
